A Memorial to my Precious Hammy :)

Me and Hammy :)
Hammy was a very special hamster who I adopted in February of 2010 and who was with me until he passed away with an untimely death in April of 2011. He was one of my most favorite pets. This is a memorial to him.

Why I loved Hammy so:

- the very first moment I saw him I fell in love: they took his little house away and went to pick him up and he flipped over on his back, feet in the air, and squinting
- he was so apathetic about everything: he wouldn't ever care what you did for the most part, he had no safety awareness whatsoever (wasn't afraid of the cats, or of potentially falling from great heights) -- he just "didn't care"
- his squinty eyes, esp. when eating
- his nose sticking out of his Ham Hut
- his crunching sounds while eating
- how he would rest in his favorite spot
- how he would push me away with his little hands when I went to kiss him
- how fastidious he was with his bathing, even up 'til the last few hours of his life
- how cute he looked when he washed his little nose and ears
- how he looked like a little mouse
- how he would slide down his slide
- how he would dig through his seeds and make a big mess
- how he was moody (at times) if I cleaned his cage or moved something (like when we moved the wheel and he threw a tantrum and buried himself under the shavings)
- the way he would jump if you breathed on him
- the way he would "type" on the keyboard
- how he was so sweet, he never bit me even though I handled him all the time and he hated it
- how he was so soft
- his unusual coloring, such a handsome Ham
- his "extraordinary testicles!!!" (according to one vet)
- the way he would pack out his little house
- how he would ride in his "ride" (toy hamster car) when we went in the car
- how he started off running only one-way in his wheel, and then when we tried to get him to run the other way he at first resisted it, then finally would only run THAT way
- how he "ran stupidly" in the wheel with his head peering out the side
- how he would continue to run in his wheel no matter what was going on
- he was an internet- and real-life-sensation -- everyone loved the Ham
- how he would climb into things like the paper towel roll and my balls of crochet cotton
- how he would "sniff holes" in his new cage
- they way his little whiskers moved
- the way he would shake while sitting at his food dish
- all of his many nicknames: Hambot, Little Ham, Baby Ham, Hamolot
- the way he would freeze in his Habitrail's tubes when I tapped on them
- the little sounds he would make: sneezes, hiccups, "reeeeeees"
- how he would yell at me if I was too loud
- how he would burrow in his travel cage and you could see the bottom of little feet and body through the bottom of it
- the things he would scarf down
- the way he would stuff his jowls with seeds and nuts -- he would pack them out and look like a copperhead
- the songs we made up about him ("everyone's wild about Hammy, but Ham's indifferent to yooooou...")
- how he could (and did) go everywhere with me: upstate, hiking, to the beach, to my knitting groups, shopping, to my bf's every weekend
- how he was such a trooper: he got sick many times but always was a tough little Ham, even outliving his one-month prognosis by yet another full month

I miss you so much Hammy. I love you and always will. You touched my heart from the very first moment I saw you. I am just glad that you are not suffering anymore. I wish I had had so much more time with you though. There will always be a huge part of my heart devoted to you. xoxoxo

Most Delicious Summer Salad EVERRRR!!!

So I came up with a new delicious salad, using ideas from two different recipes and throwing them together. It is incredibly easy and fast to make (less than 5 mins). Here is the recipe!:

1 bag shredded romaine lettuce
1 can garbanzo beans (chick peas)
1 can corn kernels
1 cup walnuts
1 cup Craisins
1/2 block Reggiano cheese (Parmesan would also probably work)
3 tbsps olive oil (roughly)
1/3 lemon

Combine the lettuce, garbanzo beans, and corn (drain and rinse first!) in a large salad bowl. Add in approximately 1c walnuts and 1c Craisins (use more or less to taste). Grate or shred the Reggiano and add it in as well. In a separate bowl whisk together the olive oil and the juice from 1/3 of the lemon. Drizzle the dressing over the salad and mix well. Serves two to three people as a meal; serves more people for an appetizer. Enjoy!

How long have you been a crafter and what inspired you to start crafting?

I've been among art and artists all my life, so art and the applied version known as craft, is an essential part of life to me. Add to it curiosity and the need to find a way to transform idle time into something tangible, and worth sharing. I been crafting art, and creating from a really early age, ever since I understood the magic behind the handmade world. Who does not remember and treasure the scent of a color pencil box, or the scent paper, and crayon had back in pre-K?

Where do you draw your inspiration from for your designs?

While I was spending my days at a barber shop, that's where I stitched my first chain and cast-on my first stitch, all in Spanish, the old good and traditional way. I got hooked on needles and yarn, and the search for more has never stopped.
Come to think of it inspiration would have to be life and nature itself: its colors, textures, forms and strength. There is where I've found a renewable source of inspiration, to express my ideas into wearable pieces. That is why I choose natural fibers, vegan at best.
Words and language, because I write and read just as much as I crochet and knit. So I do take my stitches as a verse, as a well spoken and powerful phrase, all ready to share and wear.

How long does it take you to create your pieces from beginning to end?

How long! It all depends on how many projects are wandering on my to-do list, on how busy is my kitchen, my home/studio, and my schedule. I do have a parallel life, that doesn't involve needles nor yarn.
By the time I come across that yarn, and the style that I want to venture with... there are poems behind each collection and edition, so time varies. For example my "tributo Caribe. Chontaduro. Pejibaye Necklace" it took me several trials to get it just right, stitch and style while I was writing about the tribute and the memories behind the long crocheted strands.
With the bears from head to paws, it can take me anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks.
A cowl would take about the same time. I don't rush the process, I enjoy every stitch, and I want people wearing dualchocolate to enjoy it just as much, or even more!

Where would you like to see yourself in regards to your craft in five years?

years: more organized, more informed, more... well, that's a long time from now, and since art is a constant progressive evolution I want to walk along the path savoring every step and stitch. 5 years, is to far to tell or see. I want to keep enjoying what I do, I want people to enjoy it and share it too!

Crafters With Disabilities, Part 5: catmacdesigns

Hi and welcome back to my Crafters With Disabilities series! Today is the fifth installment in the feature and today's guest is catmacdesigns of Etsy.

There are a few points to this blog: 1) to let others know what it's like to live with a disability as a crafter, 2) to let other people with disabilities know that they're not alone, and 3) to bring awareness to the disabilities that we suffer from.

And now on to the interview!

1. What disability do you have, and how long have you had it for?

I have a myriad of medical issues, most of which have stemmed from, or been made worse by one of the primary problems, FIBROMYALGIA. I also have ADVANCED DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE W/ REHERNIATION. These are the 2 primary issues, although another might become major when it is in "full bloom".

2. How long have you been crafting, and what types of crafts do you do?

I was an art major at one point, but opted to change to a different career course mostly for monetary reasons. I was originally a painter and ceramist, but have really broadened out. So I have had my hands in one pot or another since my early teens, at least.

3. How has your disability impaired your ability to craft?

It has not limited me too much....mostly I am unable to sit for very long, so I may not be able to continue in my studio as long as I might like. I am also unable to do craft fairs and such. My finger dexterity at time makes it difficult to perform some of the more intricate things, and I lose a lot of beads!!!!!

4. How has your disability inspired you to craft?

My disabilities have inspired me more than challenged me!!! Having to give up my career, but still having the desire and the need to work, be productive, and to have pride in my work led me back to my painting soon after I retired in 2004. One thing led to another, and I began picking up all the other crafts I now am involved in. I still want to keep going/exploring/learning....I want to learn to make lampwork beads, to knit and crochet!!!

5. Is there anything else you would like to say about your condition and/or your crafts?

There are a lot of us on Etsy who have this horrible and debilitating disease. We need to make more people aware of how widespread it is, so it will get the attention it deserves from the medical community. Having my life torn apart was devastating, and I felt like I had to deal with it all by myself. My art was what made the difference, and really saved me. Meeting all the people in Etsy and thru the Creative Home Arts Club, some of whom have become my closest friends, has made a huge difference.

One piece of advice I will give to other crafters out there.....there are no rules. Art is from the heart. I often hear people asking if they are allowed to do this or that with clay, paint, or whatever medium, or do make something a certain way. It is YOUR art...your piece. There are no rules, no laws. The more you experiment, the better. Think OUTSIDE of the box.

I loved her work so much that I bought three pieces from her (shown in the first three photos), and I have to say the craftsmanship (craftswomanship?) is amazing -- I have been showing off her work to everyone I see. How long have you been a crafter and what inspired you to start crafting?

I think my Mom taught me to crochet when I was 6, and had me on a sewing machine shortly after. I have been crafting for as long as I can remember, And I've just about every craft I could get my hands on. I sometimes describe myself as a former serial craft-hopper. I would crochet for a few months, do calligraphy for a few months....knitting, beadwork, sewing, scrapbooking, embriodery, etc. I used to do it all, until I finally settled into my love of tatting.

What exactly is "tatting" and how did you learn how to do it?

Well, my short attention span in crafts may be genetic as I remember my mom doing just about every craft imaginable in my childhood. One day when I was "in between" craft projects, I was wandering the aisles at the local craft store when I spied a little tatting shuttle tucked away in the knitting notions. At that moment a distant memory was sparked, of a white edging my mother had sewn on a navy blue sweater vest when I was very young. I don't think she ever tatted much more that......so I took the shuttles, as well as the only book available on the subject, home with me. That year, I learned to make the basic stitch, and proudly sent off a white tatted snowflake to my mother for Christmas. A few years went by, and I finally picked up my tatting again in January of 2009. I don't know why, but I haven't touched another craft since that point. Since then, I've found out that my Mother originally learned after a suggestion from my Great grandmother, who within the last year taught my Grandmother as well, so we now have four generations of tatters in the family!

Where do you draw your inspiration from for your designs?

My design process is very organic, and happens as I go. Sometimes I'll start with a general idea of shape, but I usually design as I go. Different colors and combinations are very inspiring. I've always had a fascination with color, so I am pleased that modern mnufacturers as well as dye artists are providing a multitude of tatting threads to keep me busy.

What are some future designs we can expect to see from you (unless this is top-secret!)?

Well, I've recently shifted myself into more of a business mode with my jewelry, so I have been trying to get myself in Winter mode in time for a Nov. 1st launch. You can expect to see a full line of snowflake jewelry and accessories soon!

How long does it take you to create your pieces from beginning to end (including dying your own thread, etc.)?

The simpler earrings I can do in about an hour. More intricate earrings, like my Spanish Dancer design can take longer, and some of the sets and necklaces have several hours invested. My hand dyed tatting/crochet threads are a very involved process. I wind the thread into skeins, paint it by hand, cure for 24 hours and then rinse and dry. It takes three or four days from the start of the batch to when it is listed in my etsy shop.

Where would you like to see yourself in regards to your craft in five years?

I would like to be to the point where I can again stay home full time. At this point I do, but we are in a position where I will need to work part time again. So my focus is to grow and be able to support my family from home.

Felting 101: Part 1

Hello all!

Haven't posted in a while, so I thought I would just share one of the things I've been working on with you -- a crocheted and felted stash bag!

Felting (otherwise known as "shrinking" when done by accident) is the process of knitting or crocheting something out of wool yarn and then throwing it in the washing machine on hot with some detergent. After running it through a few cycles, the item will have shrunk, the stitches will meld together, and the fabric will become very dense and durable.

I will write up another blog post in the next few days explaining this process in more detail, and I will also show you the second item that I felted today! But for now check out the following:

Long Island Fleece and Fiber Fair

Hi all!

I just got back a little while ago from vending at the first annual Long Island Fleece and Fiber Fair held at the Hallockville Museum Farm in Riverhead, NY! In addition to having fiber artists sell their wares, there were also many demonstrations and workshops, including sheep herding, sheep and alpaca shearing, carding, dyeing, spinning, felting, knitting, and weaving! There were also angora rabbits, sheep and lambs, and llamas and alpacas that you could pet. Below are some pictures I took throughout the day of some of the beautiful work I saw as well as some of the lovely creatures without whom none of these fiber arts would be possible! Enjoy!

I just wanted to show off this amazing gift I got from my sister Jeanne on Easter (the green you see in the bottom of it is Easter grass -- she had filled it with chocolate also) -- it is too gorgeous and cool and unique to not be shown off!!!

She found it in a thrift shop in NYC!

It is made entirely of wire, different-colored glass beads, iridescent amber-colored acrylic beads, and a sheer fabric that pulls closed with a beaded ribbon drawstring.

The Nervous Knitter

I am, what some people would call, a "nervous knitter". Certain things about knitting that I haven't tried yet scare me and make me feel anticipatory anxiety. It's silly, I realize, to be afraid of a pair of not-so-pointy needles and a ball of wool, yet I am. Yet at the same time I truly desire to try new things and expand my knitting boundaries. So far I have mastered the following (with great mental anguish ahead of time):

cables
changing colors
entrelac
lacework ("easy"-level)
increasing
decreasing
using markers
making something in 3D
fulling (felting)

Things I still need to master and that continue to give me the chills every time I think about it:

double-pointed needles
fair isle/intarsia
making a sweater
making socks
making gloves
making a hat
following a chart

And some of these are combined: like, I need to be able to use double-pointed needles to make the hat and the gloves I want to make. And the silly thing is, once I try it, I am fine. It is all anticipatory anxiety. I guess what I'm afraid of is that I will fail, and that I will waste time and energy on something that turns out to be no good. Never mind the fact that all of the other things I have tried have turned out fine...

7/9/10 UPDATE!

I have now become much less of a nervous knitter, and have attempted and conquered most of the items on my "scary list": double-pointed needles, fair isle, making a sweater, making socks, making a hat, and following a chart! The only one that I have tried and NOT conquered now is the intarsia -- that still kicks me butt! Oh well... I'm just glad I've gained so much more confidence! :D

Crafters With Disabilities, Part 4: FreedomToExpress

Hi and welcome back to my Crafters With Disabilities series! Today is the fourth installment in the feature and today's guest is FreedomToExpress of Etsy.

There are a few points to this blog: 1) to let others know what it's like to live with a disability as a crafter, 2) to let other people with disabilities know that they're not alone, and 3) to bring awareness to the disabilities that we suffer from.

And now on to the interview!

1. What disability do you have, and how long have you had it for?

I was diagnosed in Sept of 2000 with social anxiety disorder and agoraphobia a month after my father died. I probably had this way before it was even diagnosed in my forties maybe as a kid or teenage years but not exactly sure on how far back it goes.

2. How long have you been crafting, and what types of crafts do you do?

As far back as in grade six I did drawings, abstract,and drew cartoons from Mad Magazine.
I also have written five books of poetry and also been interested in creating photo cards and photo prints of nature, flowers, scenic and landscape from around the world which I do on Etsy.

I also take old frames, boxes, decorations, wall hangings and ceramics and hand-paint them
with my own style and signature and have now started painting on small canvas.

I started crafting on Feb.20th, in 2009 on Etsy and created my own shop called FreedomToExpress and truly love art in all its forms.

3. How has your disability impaired your ability to craft?

I would say in the past my disability was more in control of my emotions,
thoughts, and feelings rather than me being in control of it.
In the present time I am more focused and motivated to create all that I love
to do artistically without making my anxiety more important than my capabilities.

4. How has your disability inspired you to craft?

It all started in writing poetry in journals
about my own personal emotions and feelings
as a release and as a way to express my hurt,
pain, sorrows and joys throughout the years.
I kept them for myself at first and with some
encouragement from my sister Bonnie decided to
put my writings into books.
It helped me heal from my own demons and past haunts
and broke a lot of negative patterns that I carried around with
me for too long.

I decided to do a lot of personal homework and to then
share it with others in poetic free verse and in art.
As time went by I learned a lot and turned my life around
from a habitual negative existence to a more healthy and positive one.

It has inspired me in many ways in self confidence and self esteem,
by going in a positive direction to achieve creatively no matter
the personal challenge and situation.
That I can be proud of what I have accomplished as a crafter and as a person.

I am the rags to riches story in thought and consider myself a positive
role model to those who struggle with a disability that you can still
succeed and have a smile on your face no matter the disorder.

I have been crafting since I was a child with my Mom. I do anything from working with glass, art, decals, sewing and pendants.... I guess you can say, I love making just about anything..

3. How has your disability impaired your ability to craft?

I get tired or my hands will hurt that I have to stop or not even do anything that day. There are days that my body hurts so much that I can't even sit in a chair for too long.

It takes me to a place a relaxation and away from the worries one takes on.

5. Is there anything else you would like to say about your condition and/or your crafts?

With the right care and understanding you can learn to live with Fibromyalgia. It is so important for your entire family and good friends to understand your pain and how you feel sometimes. It is difficult on some days and when you put Fibromyalgia, panic attacks and IBS it's not fun but I am happy with my life, my friends and my wonderful family. Happiness is the best medicine!
As far as my crafts go...I love having my little craft shop. I love making so many things and having people buy or trade for them. I am always thinking of new ideas which I find are endless.

There are a few points to this blog: 1) to let others know what it's like to live with a disability as a crafter, 2) to let other people with disabilities know that they're not alone, and 3) to bring awareness to the disabilities that we suffer from.

1. What disability do you have, and how long have you had it for?

I have mild/moderate Cerebral Palsy and have had it all my life, which to date is 41 years.

2. How long have you been crafting, and what types of crafts do you do?

I have been crafting for as long as I can remember.. most of my life. I do many different types of crafts; sewing and other needle work, graphic design, painting, drawing, "kids crafts" I used to teach arts & crafts to preschoolers.

3. How has your disability impaired your ability to craft?

I don't think my disability has impaired my ability to craft, it just takes me longer to do things than more able bodied crafters. Fortunately I have the time I need and it takes me to complete projects I'm working on.

4. How has your disability inspired you to craft?

Crafting has always been a hobby, it keeps my mind and my body occupied, more now than in years past. I'm inspired by the challenges of not only the skills I use in various forms of crafting, but the imaginations and needs of my clients who request custom made items. Necessity has been the biggest inspiration my disability has brought to my crafting. It is necessary that I use fine and gross motor skills to function in order to do even the most mundane un-crafty things. So, by crafting, I'm able to get my physical therapy in daily and have fun doing it.

5. Is there anything else you would like to say about your condition and/or your crafts?

Folks who have Cerebral Palsy in all it's severity levels and combinations of types and daily challenges are consistently told of what they cannot do. Learn what you can do, by putting your mind to it. Set small goals for yourself, achieve them and find out in the process that just because your body works differently, your mind and your determined spirit can achieve what you have been told you can't. Discover through art or crafts what drives you, inspires you, and makes you say Wow! I didn't know I could do that.

Crafters With Disabilities, Part 1: NotSoShabbyChic

Welcome to a new feature that I will be posting on my blog: the "Crafters With Disabilities" series! I have a line-up of different crafters with all sorts of different disabilities that will be featured here in the upcoming weeks -- so please check back!

Having been on Etsy for over a year now, and having frequented the chat rooms there for nearly that whole time, I have met many wonderful people, and I have been amazed by the number of them who, like I, also suffer with disabilities.

There are a few points to this blog: 1) to let others know what it's like to live with a disability as a crafter, 2) to let other people with disabilities know that they're not alone, and 3) to bring awareness to the disabilities that we suffer from.

To kick off the feature, I will first answer the questions myself. I will also feature certain items from the featured seller's shops. Please come back to read the future posts!

1. What disability do you have, and how long have you had it for?

I have had both fibromyalgia (FM) and undifferentiated connective tissue disease (UCTD) since I was 24 (I am 32 now); I've had endometriosis for probably my whole life; and I have advanced degenerative disc disease (DDD) which causes herniated discs among other problems for who knows how long, and I have suffered from depression and anxiety for pretty much my whole life.

2. How long have you been crafting, and what types of crafts do you do?

I have been crafting for as long as I can remember... my mother as well as my grandmothers are/were all crafters. My mother always highly encouraged crafting, and when I was very young (around age 8) she taught me how to knit, crochet, latch hook, sew, embroider, draw, paint, sculpt, and many other things. Over the years I also picked up jewelry-making, quilling, decoupage, and most recently -- needle felting.

3. How has your disability impaired your ability to craft?

Almost all of my disorders cause pain, and most of them can also cause fatigue, and one of them can cause chronic fevers, and all of these issues can make it difficult to do anything at times, including crafting. I also have a hard time with motivation and follow-through due to the depression. I have a hard time sitting in one position for too long because my joints will lock up and I will have severe pain when trying to unbend my limbs. At other times I have had lots of pain in my hands. I also often sit with my neck bent when I craft, and this can cause numbness and pain in my neck due to the DDD.

4. How has your disability inspired you to craft?

My disabilities have greatly inspired me to craft. I cannot work regular hours at a job and I am on disability as a result, so I have a lot of time to fill at home. When I discovered Etsy last December (2008), it was a godsend. It helps not only to fill up the time, but it also makes me happy to create for others as well as myself, and it helps to take the focus off of whatever symptoms are bothering me at the moment. Whenever I finish a project I now feel a sense of pride -- that despite all of my problems, I have accomplished something! Having these disabilities has also linked me up to some amazing fellow crafters with disabilities (who will be featured in the upcoming weeks), and we all inspire each other which is wonderful.

5. Is there anything else you would like to say about your condition and/or your crafts?

I have found that there are many, MANY crafters out there with disabilities. If you have a disability of any kind I can guarantee you that there is someone else out there who suffers from the same thing. There is a great team on Etsy for people with disabilities called "The

How to Ship International From Home (in the U.S.)

Hi!

I often see Etsy sellers confused about how to ship internationally, especially from home (NOTE: the package must weigh under 13 oz to mail it from home), so often I see: a) they don't offer it at all, or b) they say in the item description to "contact them for a quote". I would guess that 1/5- 1/4 of my sales are international -- so to not offer it at all you are really losing out on a big corner of the market, and to only offer it by contacting you first rules out a lot of impulse buys.

Here I will attempt to demystify international shipping from home for you all in a few simple steps (it's really easier than it looks):

PREPARATION:

1. Go buy a postal or a food scale. You can buy a 10 lb postal scale from the USPS for $39.95, or you can use a food scale which vary in price. You want to make sure that the scale you buy will be able to weigh your items (e.g., don't get a 10 lb postal scale if your items weigh more than 10 lbs).

2. Go to the post office and stock up on stamps of all denominations. I usually get 20 $1 stamps, and 10 of the following: 1 cent, 3 cent, 5 cent, 10 cent, 28 cent, and 44 cent.

3. Go buy whatever mailing supplies you will need: envelopes, boxes, bubble wrap, mailing tape, paper and ink for your printer, etc.

4. Go download the USPS Shipping Assistant. You can do this here. Click on "Go" where it says "Download Now". Follow all instructions to install.

MAILING A PACKAGE:

1. Weigh your item on your scale. Make sure this includes all packaging materials. And always round up to the nearest ounce if you're using a non-digital scale.

2. Open up the Shipping Assistant. You should see an icon for it on your desktop -- double-click it and it will open; it might take a couple minutes.

3. Under "Label Type", select "International Shipping Label".

4. Fill out all information marked with a red asterisk.

5. Check off the box in the lower right-hand corner marked "Mailing Conditions, Customs Information, and Insurance Conditions".

6. Make sure your printer is on and connected to your computer, and click "Print".

7. Cut out the slip that is printed out and affix to your envelope/box.

8. IMPORTANT!!!: Affix the amount of postage indicated by the slip.

9. As long as the package weighs under 13 oz, you can just put it out with your regular mail to be picked up by your postman! If it weighs over 13 oz you must bring it to the post office.

***If you want to print out a packing slip, you can either do this from Paypal or from Etsy.

Yesterday my boyfriend and I went to a lovely little wildlife refuge called the "Quogue Wildlife Refuge". They are open 365 days a year, and it is free of charge to enter. They have an indoor nature center with live tortoises, fish, and a chinchilla, as well as preserved specimens of local birds, skeletons of local animals, and a huge library of books about birds and nature that you can take out. They also have 3 different trails that you can hike on. But our favorite part was the animal rehab area; they have a great horned owl, a barn owl, a barred owl, a screech owl, a peregrine falcon, a merlin, two red-tailed hawks, a bald eagle, a red fox, and a bobcat! Our favorite was the great horned owl, who hooted at us to no end and would take a funny posture --like a cat-- every time it did it. Most of these animals were hit by cars, but some were also shot by hunters. :( Some were also raised by humans and therefore became imprinted on them and unable to hunt for themselves. And now, for the real reason that I wrote this blog, is the picture and the video that my boyfriend took of our friend the owl (in the video you can hear my horrific Long Island accent and then him mimicking me, lol):

My First Craft Fair!!!

I just had my first craft fair this past Sunday, October 25th, 2009. I was a nervous wreck the week leading up to it, missing a couple nights of sleep and agonizing over countless details. I thought my nervousness would dissipate once I was there for a while, but in fact it did not... lol. It was a great experience, however, and I look forward to doing it again! I walked away with a nice profit as well as the contact info of some very nice local crafters that I met. The items of mine that did best were my needle felted items (sold some appliques, my ladybug, and my spooky cat mini-play-set) and my earrings. I also sold my first bracelet, a ring, some fabric-covered buttons, and some hair clips.

Some of the wonderful people I met included my "neighbor" Cathy Nichols of cathynichols.etsy.com. She does beautiful paintings including painting with wax! My other "neighbor" was Lisa Dalton of lmdalton.etsy.com. She makes adorable sewed kitty cats called "Travel Kitties" -- you can take photos of your Travel Kitty and write up stories and send them in to her to be published on her site! Fun! I also met a woman who knits with size FIFTY knitting needles -- she uses up to 10 strands of yarn at a time! Her husband makes the wooden needles and they sell them at a shop in Huntington, NY called "Knitting on the Lamb".

The craft show occurred alongside a screening of the movie "Handmade Nation", followed up by a Q&A session with producer and director Faythe Levine. The movie explores how young people have taken up crafting and the various reasons they do it, from helping the environment to fighting the take-over of the corporate world. As a vendor I got to see it for free!

All in all it was a very successful day, and I am so glad that I was invited to be a part of it. A great big thank you goes out to the show's organizer, Gabi Moisan of Sought.etsy.com!

Hi all!

Haven't written anything in a while so I thought I'd post a blog about how I spent my past Friday night! I went out and picked out a couple of pumpkins (and also got some pumpkin streussel and pumpkin jam, of all things) and my boyfriend and I carved them (or at least tried to! His pumpkin was ridiculously hard to carve!). We saved the seeds and I cleaned them off and then baked them on a baking sheet (after spraying them with olive oil spray and lightly sprinkling them with sea salt) for about 30 mins, stirring occasionally, at 325 degrees. They were delicious! One of my cats came out to check out what we were doing and he didn't seem too sure at all about the whole scene. All in all we had a fun night! :)

Hi all!

Oh it feels so good to finish things!!! I just finished yet another clutch, this one made out of a lovely new (to me) yarn that a customer told me about: Lion Brand's Sasha yarn. It is 96% wool and 4% nylon and is incredibly soft and not itchy at all. It has a remarkable property to it: once you knit it up, the purl side resembles fleece! I thought this was so cool!

So the first one I made is in the first two photos below, and that one I'm going to keep -- it has a beautiful sparkly vintage button with black rhinestones on it:

And the photo below shows the version I am offering in my shop -- it has a beautiful Swarovski bead adorning it instead of the vintage button (I only had two of those and I'm keeping the other one for something else):

Just wanted to post a few pics of my newest project: a granny square blanket! I'm using Caron's Simply Soft yarn and I LOVE it (despite the fact that it has a tendency to split at times) -- it's sooo soft and has such a beautiful sheen! Let me know what you think of it!

Knitted and Felted Clutch Purse!

So I just finished adding the final touches onto a clutch purse that I knit and then felted using some yarn that I didn't like. I was planning all along on selling the thing because I hated the colors of the yarn. Well after being very pleased with the felted result of a purse knit entirely in a simple garter stitch, I have to say my heart was warming up towards the little piece of fabric. I just now added some snaps and also a gorgeous sparkly vintage crystal button to the front of it. Once it all came together, I realized something: I love it. And I cannot bear to part with it. Here it is in all its glory:

New Obsession: Granny Squares!!!

So yesterday I got my first crocheting lesson from my mom in oh, probably 18 or so years! I used to crochet, knit, and sew as a kid, but once I hit my teen years I dropped it all. I picked up knitting again this past winter with a vengeance, and just lately I've been craving crocheting as well. So yesterday my mom re-taught me how to make the infamous granny square, and I haven't been able to stop since.

Everything I've made since last night.

Three granny squares and a circle -- I'm thinking of making a scarf
and soap sacks out of the squares, and facial scrub pads out of the
circles.

I love how these came out -- I used 100% organic and mercerized
cotton to make these, and they have a beautiful sheen to them. I'm
thinking of making a place mat out of the full squares, and I'm also
thinking of making a headband using only the green yarn and only
the two inner "squares".

I love how this one came out, but the photo doesn't do it justice. I used
3 different-colored glittery yarns for this one. I'm thinking of making
these into a place mat as well, and am also thinking of making a head-
band out of only the off-white yarn and using only the two innermost
"squares".

My newest squares!!! These are available as a set of 4 coasters in my
Etsy shop! I'm also planning on making a scarf out of these!

Vacation!

Hi all!

Just got back last night from an awesome trip to upstate NY! Went rock-climbing (first time), hiking, and kayaking (first time) twice at the Mohonk Mountain House, went hiking again at the Mohonk Preserve, and did a little bit of biking around someone's house where I took a spill and hit my head, bruised a rib, cut my foot open, and landed in a big patch of poison ivy -- but it didn't stop me from doing anything! Also saw lots of birds: black and white warblers, a magnolia warbler (a first), some type of flycatcher, a possible Cooper's hawk (a would-be first), a raven (a first), turkey vultures, ruby-throated hummingbirds, red-tailed hawks, a sharp-shinned hawk or two (including one that caught a sparrow :( ), American goldfinches (lots of them!!!), and the usual sparrows, catbirds, fish crows, and starlings. Also kayaked with some fish and heard some frogs. And also got a ton of knitting done, of course... can't be craftless for too long!! ;)

Uleen Toovey, a.k.a. Chromasmear, occupied a dear place in my heart. I have to admit when I first saw her in the chat rooms I was a bit intimidated by her -- she was so beautiful, and knew everyone, and seemed so self-assured. Not much time went by though until I realized that she was one of the most down-to-earth and kindest souls I had ever met. She was incredibly warm and welcoming not only to the newcomers, but also to the Etsy chat regulars. She never came into the chat room and failed to say hello to me.

I have so many memories of times with her in chat: playing chat games (she was always one of the people to organize them in order to bring all of us together while also having fun) discussing our line of work (she worked with the disabled like I do), planning on how to help animals in need, and lots of little silly things like where to get pretty hair ties (FlyingButtons was her favorite) or great-smelling teas (BlueRavenTea was her favorite). She also recently voted on my "Help Me Name My New Baby Cockatiel" poll; she voted for "Beetle Bug", which was my personal favorite too. Yesterday, in honor of her, I decided to definitely name him/her "Beetle Bug" in her memory. I will also always keep my bunny avatar up, because the one time I changed it she got so upset that she couldn't easily find me!! I ended up changing it back just for her.

Her mother wants us to donate to our local animal shelters in Uleen's memory. Please help keep her spirit alive by doing so; I know it would mean so much to her. I Finished my First Shawl!!!

...and my first garment, as well!!! The shawl has taken me a couple of months to knit, row after painstaking row, stitch after painstaking stitch, mistake after painstaking mistake (haha just kidding... well actually, no I'm not), and ended up reaching 57 inches in width!!!

Inspiration at the Beach

One of my all-time favorite places to go and rejuvenate my soul is at the beach by my house. As soon as I pull my car into the park I feel the old familiar feeling of relaxation and a melting away of cares. As soon as I step out of the car and head toward the beach I feel the joy of being able to breathe in fresh air and feeling a nice breeze on my skin. And as soon as I step into the sand I feel any remaining cares slip away as I become entranced in a state of utter relaxation and bliss.

While I am at the beach I not only slip into a meditative state, but I also am collecting shells, rocks, driftwood, and other tidbits; I am birdwatching; I am getting exercise; and I am becoming filled with ideas and motivation of positive things that I want to do once I leave the beach. I try to make going here a regular practice, but sometimes (like in the winter) I don't keep up with it, and I suffer in very obvious ways.

Each and every one of us needs a place like this to retreat to. If you don't have a place like this you should make it an active goal to find a place where you can go and sink into a state of utter relaxation. Sometimes you don't even need to leave the house -- the bathtub or the garden are other places where I can achieve this state as well (although they're not quite as good as the beach). Without a place like this, we can become easily irritated, worn out, depressed, and stagnant with our creativity. Life's too short to let that happen.

Okay, so most of the people I meet in Etsy's chat rooms are awesome. HOWEVER, there are a few who have been driving me NUTS.

It is SO RUDE to assume that just because someone compliments you on your work that they want to buy it and to then harrass them about it every time you see them thereafter!!!! And then you act all surprised and/or RUDE when I finally politely tell you to leave me alone and you act like you don't know what I'm talking about!!!!

Asking me "do you have the money yet" for something that I NEVER said I would buy, or "are you ready to buy ______ yet" when AGAIN I never said I would buy from you is really asking for me to come back at you full-throttle. Don't do it.

Kitty Loves Patons SWS Yarn!!!

I had brought my knitting with me when I did laundry at a friend's house the other day, and when I brought everything home I stuck the knitting in the laundry bag (green and white striped bag in upper-right corner). Well once I was home, one of my cats actually went INTO the bag and pulled the whole thing out onto the floor so that he could lay on it!!! Here is the crime scene photo:

I Sold a Pair of Earrings!!!!!

I am so excited!!! One of the goals I had for my Etsy shop was met this morning: to sell a pair of earrings. It was a goal for me simply for the reason that it is very hard to sell jewelry on there due to the massive amount of competition. PLUS, the ones I sold were ones that included my very own needle felted beads! :D

"Fashioning Felt" Exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum

So I went to the felt exhibit on Sunday, and it was pretty cool. Don't know that I would bother traveling very far to see it, though... there's not all that much there. I also was not allowed to take pictures (I snuck in a couple anyway, though, until I realized I was on camera and they could see me with my camera...):

...and I don't think I like it. I think he's cute, but he didn't come out exactly like I was hoping he would. At least this one has legs, a tail, and isn't balding though, lol. But his legs are too short... note to self for next time.

Just wanted to stop in quick to mention what a lovely day I had outside today! It was in the 60s, the sun was out even though it wasn't supposed to be, I saw 24 different species of birds today, and the most important one was the American Robin, a symbol of the arrival of springtime weather!

Little Lambie

Okay, so last post for tonight: an update on my needle felted lamb. I'm having problems with this little guy:

He needs more wool and he also needs legs; but these are not the problems. The problems are his ears and his nose/mouth. Do you think his ears are too long? And is his nose/mouth messed-up-looking (for lack of a better adjective)? PLEASE give me your honest opinion. I am thinking of lopping off his ears and making them shorter, and I'm also thinking of giving him a nose job... should I?? Or should I leave him as is and try out my new ideas on lambie #2??

Painting and Needle Felting! :)

And here's some paper mache/decoupage projects that I just finished up and have for sale in my shop (with the exception of the photo frame on the bottom in the middle -- after looking at the photo, I realized the trim wasn't aligned right.... which sucks...):

For some reason, I love to paint on wood and paper mache and ceramic and resin. I love painting objects . I just can't paint pictures; my hands are too shaky! :(

And here's an update on some of the needle felting projects I posted a couple of weeks back (and also an unfinished knitted and needle felted clutch purse):

There are now two ducks, both with faces, and the bear has a face now as well... although I am not happy with it. The eyes just seem too vacuous to me... and therefore, scary. The pic also shows all of the needle felted flowers I made and have for sale in my shop. I also have been obsessed with knitting lately, and in the upper-right you can see an almost-finished purse that I came up with on a whim. It just needs another tie, and perhaps a strap. The yarn I used is "SWS" yarn -- I LOVE it! It is 70% wool and 30% soy, and it is SOOO soft and the colors are so gorgeous!!! The needle felted flowers aren't attached, I just put them there to see what they looked like.

Okay so I am lazy when it comes to updating this blog! Oh well. I feel motivated now, so I'll post a couple things!

Firstly (is that a word?), I have some new springtime needle felted creations available in my Etsy shop (link is in the upper right)! The yellow "chick" (now a duck... couldn't get the beak pointy enough) now has eyes and also a little meadow with flowers and actually already sold! But I do have another one up for sale.

"Bobblehead Bunny" is my newest creation and is also for sale:

And I also made some 3D flowers using applique molds! Here is the large rose (my favorite):

One thing I'm finding about needle felting is that it's nearly impossible to make an exact replica of something you've made before (unless you're using a mold). This can be both frustrating and exciting. I've heard this before: that each critter or piece you make will end up having it's own "personality". For example, I'm not as happy with Bobblehead Bunny 2 as I am with the bunny head that is shown in my avatar. Also, the tinier the piece you are creating, the harder it is to add detail, and therefore the harder it is to reproduce it. Oh well! There are bigger things in life to worry about!

Needle Felting, The Beginning...

So I have been teaching myself how to needle felt the last 2-3 weeks with the aid of a book, videos on youtube, and trial and error. The photo below shows all of the items I have made or am working on so far; the very first item I made is the little pink & green strawberry, and the last thing I've been working on is the little lamb:

The next photo shows all of the items I am still working on, which I will show "finished" photos for when they are done, for better or for worse:

The blue duck-like figure was originally supposed to be more of a songbird, and the yellow duck-like figure was supposed to be a chick. I find it funny that they are both turning out to look like ducks, b/c ducks have always been one of my favorite creatures. :)

And I am having trouble keeping the sheep's head from looking like a dog's head. But oh well, I guess practice makes perfect, or something...

The teddy bear needs a face, and that is making me nervous. I don't know why doing stuff like this makes me nervous... if I screw it up, it's easy enough to fix... and the butterfly needs some color, but I'm afraid if I screw that up that it won't be as easy to fix...

I'm going to add some embellishments like sequins and beads to some of the stars, hearts, and flowers. That's making me nervous too. Am I crazy? I think so.

Mah First Blog... well, not really

But this is my first blog on here, and I intend on taking this blog a bit more seriously than the other one I have. My mission here is to document my progress (or lack thereof) through the world of handmade arts & crafts. I am in the process of making items that I have made for a long time for my etsy shop -- www.notsoshabbychic.etsy.com -- , but I am also in the more interesting process of learning some new crafts (needle felting) and re-learning some old ones (knitting). I wanted someplace to post notes and photos as to my progress so that I can [hopefully] see that with time and practice that I am improving.

I am also an avid birdwatcher, gardener, and lover of all things nature, so I also wanted someplace in which I could share with the world (or just the one or two of you who will be following this) what it is that fills me with joy and what inspires me. :)
